It is illegal for North Koreans to flee the country without the regime’s permission. And regime restricts the people’s movement. Inside or outside.
But every year, thousands of North Koreans risk their lives to escape the country.
Many who fail are taken back and met with severe punishments.

4. Refugee Exploitation Those who succeed escape to China.
In China, the government does not recognize them as refugees.
Their illegal status makes living hard and leaves them vulnerable.
Most of them are exploited by corrupt employers and sex traffickers.
Some captured by Chinese military are sent back to North Korea for ransom.
Children born to North Korean refugee mothers and Chinese fathers face difficulties.
