1.2 Visual Text Essays

2 Why do we need to refer to film techniques?
The essay questions ask you to refer to “visual and oral language features” to support your argument. That means you must include discussion of film techniques. You should refer to at least 2 techniques throughout your essay and provide at least 1 specific example per paragraph.

3 How do we work this into our paragraphs?
Make sure you are using a clear paragraph structure (SEEL) When you make a statement, you should be aiming to refer to a film technique used, which helps the viewer to see or understand this- like you would a quote in a written text essay. When explaining a technique you must: Use the correct terminology Describe a specific way the technique is used at a specific point in the film. Explain what this shows the viewer, and how.

5 As a class, plan an essay for the question below
Describe at least ONE conflict in the text(s). Explain why the conflict was important to the text(s) as a whole, supporting your points with examples of visual and / or oral language features.

Paragraph One: Describe Conflict between Paragraph Two: Explain. This conflict is important because it helps the viewer to understand the character V through the motivations for his actions Paragraph Three: Explain. This conflict is important because it helps the viewer to understand the theme of freedom vs control Conclusion.

7 As a class, brainstorm techniques that can be used as evidence for each of these paragraphs

8 As a class, write the describe paragraph.

9 Trying it out yourself In your groups, write the first explain paragraph. I will come and help you as you work on this. Individually, Write the second explain paragraph. You must submit your individual paragraph on edmodo or via for feedback.
