1
What is IRONY? After the slideshow, review irony examples in our short stories (“The Ransom of Red Chief” and “The Cask of Amontillado”) and real examples from history.
2
Isn’t it ironic? Don’t you think?
Irony IS: A reversal of expectations Using opposite meaning for comedy or emphasis Having insight a character doesn’t Irony ISN’T: A coincidence An unfortunate situation Something kinda silly
3
3 Kinds of Irony Verbal Irony Situational Irony Dramatic Irony
4
Verbal Irony Verbal irony is when someone says one thing and means another. It is NOT a lie, because the speaker expects the audience to know that what he/she said is not what he/she means. It what’s said is meant as an insult, that’s sarcasm.
5
This is NOT fine.
6
The weather is not actually the same.
7
Belle does NOT consider Gaston to be a pleasant surprise, she says she doesn’t deserve him (not as a compliment but as an insult), and Le Fou KNOWS it didn’t go well and asks anyway.
8
Situational Irony Situational irony happens when the audience expects one thing, but the opposite thing happens. The key is that there is a reversal between what is expected and what is reality.
9
A sign saying not to post signs is posted.
10
The fire station is on fire.
11
Several things: We expect the girl to be falsely accused (but she is a witch), we expect the peasants’ stupid answers to be wrong (but the teacher responds as if they were great answers), and we expect the woman to be heavier than a duck (but she weighs the same).
12
Dramatic Irony Dramatic irony happens when the audience knows something the characters do not. We know the shark is there, but the swimmer does not.
13
The cat is not being nice . . . In fact, he’s cooking and seasoning the fish!
14
Unlike Caesar, we know that Brutus (and the other “boys) are having a get-together to kill Caesar.
15
We know what happens to snow, but poor Olaf has no idea what would happen if he were actually exposed to the heat.
16
Are the following things IRONIC or just FUNNY?
17
SITUATIONAL IRONY: One would expect a place that is “always open” to always be open, but it is currently closed.
18
Sometimes life imitates art, but this isn’t ironic.
19
A croc eating a croc is funny, but it’s not ironic
A croc eating a croc is funny, but it’s not ironic. (Besides, this is actually an alligator.)
20
SITUATIONAL IRONY: It says nothing is written in stone while being written in stone.
21
DRAMATIC IRONY: We know the water isn’t that deep, but he doesn’t.

The misinterpretation is funny, but Private Baldrick does “deny everything.”
23
We expect librarians (and librarians to be silent), but this librarian makes more noise than anyone else!

As funny as it is that Mr. Bean goes through such lengths to cheat on the wrong test, this is simply an unfortunate situation.
25
Benedick and Beatrice sling verbal irony back and forth in their battle of wits with lots of backhanded compliments and sarcasm.
