2 Your Assignment – Part 1 1. You are to read the slides 2-6 to review what we have already talked about. For slides 2. You are to read and take notes on slides You can write your notes in the format of a graphic organizer or straight notes. You must include everything in red on your notes. On the very last slide, you will have one more assignment.

5 Colonists respond First continental congress met to discuss a resolution (Georgia and florida did not send delegates) Agreed to boycott English trade and form militias Britain became more harsh and then…….

6 Colonists respond The militia had weapons and colonial leaders in concord and Lexington, mass. Midnight ride of paul revere “The shot heard round the world” refers to the beginning of the revolution Loyalists and patriots became enemies

7 What about Georgia? Very divided on this issue
Worried about protection Were not ready yet to boycott Britain Older Georgian colonists wanted to remain loyal to Britain

8 Second Continental congress
Colonies boycotted Georgia The continental army was created led George Washington Georgia finally joins colonies

9 Battles begin British won battle of bunker hill but lost many men – proved our army could fight back The Battle of the Rice Boats was the first fighting in Georgia. Colonists set fire to a British ship loaded with rice in Savannah. The British left and took Gov. Wright with them.

10 One Last Try for peace Colonies sent the “olive branch” petition asking for restored peace – would not become independent but would not be enslaved either King George III rejected it and allowed harsher acts to be passed and fighting continued Thomas paine wrote Common sense which urged americans to declare their independence. It made a difference and more people agreed to the revolution.

11 Declaration of Independence
Has three parts: a. Preamble – Why the document is written for our natural rights B. Grievances – Complaints against the King and British Government C. Statement – Removing ourselves from British rule Thomas Jefferson was chosen to write it. July 1776, Congress adopted it Signing of it was August 2 and John Hancock signed it first. Then it was signed in order of the voting in Congress starting with the Northern colonies first. Georgia was the last to sign. The three delegates from Georgia that signed were Button Gwinnett, Lyman Hall, and George Walton.

12 Final Assignment You will need to go to the following link and complete the following tasks: Choose two sentences that serve as strong statemments from the preamble and write it down Read the grievances and list the 5 items (actions) of Britain that you think are the most serious to the colonists Write two sentences that declare or state the intention of the colonists if Britain does not meet the demands of the colonists.
