Objectives
Define and use the techniques seen in the language of information.
Be able to compile and report information.

2. Before warm-up – why is this important
Conveying information – that is the skill that the Leaving Cert tests. Once you know something, you must be able to pass that knowledge on. The world depends on this.
This is popular in the modern world. It is used online to convey ideas quickly, clearly and easily. Comes up often in L.C.
This is the skill used in presenting ideas, which is a key skill used in job interviews and in jobs themselves.

3. Warm-up: the tone we’re looking for
The language of information is clear, precise and takes no sides. It is unbiased and wants to give you the details to make your own decision.
Your warm-up task is to choose a hobby and tell me why it is interesting. Use facts, vague numbers and details but DO NOT use the words ‘I think’, ‘In my opinion’ or ‘I believe’.

5. L.O.I. Checklist – note it down
The journalist’s checklist. To effectively analyse an event, you need to ask the following questions: Who, what, why, where, when, how?
Task: describe a hobby using the checklist.

Clear presentation. Is the information organised in an effective manner so as to be understood by another person. Bullet points allowed. One point per paragraph recommended. Point-evidence-analyse is the structure of paragraphs.
Task: list the facilities of the school, their location and purpose (Point – evidence – analysis).

Are paragraphs simple, short, relevant and without waffle. Do they get directly to the point?
Task: shorten these paragraphs to 5-10 words.

Task: List two pros and two cons of getting homework.

10. L.O.I. Checklist
Is there an emphasis on facts, numbers, statistics and details. Evidence must back up points.
Homework: A one page report on the school.
Use the checklists, journals, the school website and ask questions to human beings.
Teachers, pupils, subjects, facilities, activities, transport, food, rules, layout, reward, punishment, etc.
