1 Ancient Greece Location

2 The location, the sea, the landscape, the climate, and the soil played a critical role in the development of Ancient Greece. How would each of these affect the growth of a country?

3 The Greek peninsula was part of the Balkan region
The Greek peninsula was part of the Balkan region. The area was made up of many islands. It was surrounded by water from the Aegean Sea and the Mediterranean sea. What is a peninsula? What are the positive and negative consequences when a territory is built on one?

4 Surrounding countries were Italy, Illyria (Albania), Thrace (Bulgaria), Macedonia, Asia Minor (Turkey), and Persia (Iran)

5 The landscape in Greece was rocky and mountainous, which made it difficult to cultivate land even though it was bordered by water. Why would it be hard to farm on a mountain? Why is it difficult with rocky terrain?

6 Despite the bad soil, they were able to cultivate wheat, barley, grapes, and olives. They had livestock and fished a lot. Are these foods still a big part of Greek culture and food today?

7 In your own words, explain what a city-state is.

9 The people decided to use the Aegean Sea and the Mediterranean Sea to conduct trade between polis. These colonies provided food to all of the people in the city-states. How is this similar and different from how people get food today?

10 With this system, many people stopped farming and focused on other work.

11 By the 5th century, Greece had so much sea and trade power that they dominated the Mediterranean. Polis started expanding even more. What do you think the expansion looked like?

12 Two of the largest city-states were Athens and Sparta.

13 The Persian Empire was the main rival of the Ancient Greeks
The Persian Empire was the main rival of the Ancient Greeks. In the 6th century, it ruled over Asia minor and surrounding locations. It set out to conquer Greece.
