II. Analysis Paragraphs (body paragraphs)
Minimum of TWO paragraphs TEAR (For Every Paragraph) T: Topic Sentence (Short sentence indicating what you’ll be explaining)

E: Embedded Text (Sentence which includes chunks of text that describes the element you will be explaining in the next sentence. NEVER quote an entire sentence; pick parts of the passage which illustrates your analysis)

A: Analysis (Explain how the literary device illustrated in the evidence above helps the writer achieve his purpose/meaning.)

R: Response (This short sentence is your response to the part of the passage you explained. DO NOT USE FIRST PERSON.)

III. Universal Statement (conclusion)
The last paragraph should be about the same length as your introduction (short!) You can write this as a universal statement or compare the passage to another literary work. It is an assessment of the passage. DO NOT USE “In Conclusion” or “therefore” in this paragraph.
