As teachers, you all know we have ambitious goals in Tennessee
As teachers, you all know we have ambitious goals in Tennessee. It is our goal to be the fastest improving state in the nation. Well, this last fall we found out that, thanks to YOUR hard work and the hard work of so many teachers and leaders, we achieved this goal on the NAEP assessment. Students in Tennessee grew more than students in any other state. (1 min)
6
In fact, students in Tennessee grew more than any students have ever grown on NAEP.
This shows us that our kids are capable of real growth. This showed us that we are capable of leading this growth. This showed us how far we can go. (1 min)
7
We saw significant growth across all areas on the 2013 NAEP assessment.
Our students grew in both reading and math at fourth and eighth grade. In fact, in 3 out of 4 subject areas, we jumped over other states and we are no longer in the 40s. In 3 out of 4 subjects, our students are in the 30s. Our work to grow our students is making them more competitive. It is giving them a brighter future and creating a brighter future for our whole state. (1 min)
8
But we still have significant work to do.
19.1 19.0 19.2 19.3 th grade NAEP results showed Tennessee lagging behind other states That being said, we still have significant work to do. Our students have not shown as much progress on other metrics – including the ACT and 12th grade NAEP. Our scores are stagnant in these areas. In addition to statewide metrics, I know you all likely have a number of students on your minds that have struggled in school and need significant support in order to be successful in their futures. (1 min) Note: ACT data is based on students who took the test in the standard time only, to allow for comparisons to previous years. The score for all students including extended time was 19.0.

EVERY student deserves a meaningful and rigorous education!
Because... SAY: Because every single child deserves to be pushed and challenged and have choices – choices that will provide a living wage and security and hope. As teachers and leaders, we have the enormous responsibility and privilege of helping deliver an education worthy of our students potential. And that is what the School Team Training Series is designed to help us do. (1 min) EVERY student deserves a meaningful and rigorous education!
10
Our goal Our goal is to be the fastest improving state in the nation, again. When we do so, students in Tennessee will perform above the national average in reading and math. SAY: Therefore; our goal is to be the fastest improving state in the nation, again. If we do so, TN students will perform above the national average in reading and in math! Note: if you would like to add in the video from Assistant Commissioner Emily Barton that you viewed in your training you could add that video here. (1 min)

Guiding Principles Across all grade-bands and subjects, there are common guiding principles for each TNCore training. All students are capable of achieving at a high level Students rise to the level of expectation when challenged and supported appropriately Students learn best when they are authentically engaged in their own learning We must continuously improve our effectiveness as teachers and leaders in order to improve student success We must make every minute with our students count with purposeful work and effective instruction SAY: Across all grade bands, subjects and different trainings – all TNCore trainings have a common foundation through guiding principles. These shape the training and inform its design. Let’s read them (have class read). You will hear these themes throughout the year as we dig into the training. (2 min)

One student that inspires you to surmount these challenges.
Rally Robin One challenge you have faced in the transition to the new state standards. One student that inspires you to surmount these challenges. NOTE: You may wish to insert introductions here if you are facilitating to a group that is not familiar with one another. SAY: Now let’s start by getting the conversation going. We are going to take a few minutes each to answer these questions at our tables (read questions.) Learning Leaders: Share your own stories, then allow a few minutes for conversation at the tables.

Continuous Improvement Cycle – Math/Literacy
Identify options for next instructional task Select rigorous instructional task, do task personally, discuss with colleagues + identify essential understandings Engage in the task with students + collect student work Analyze student work with colleagues + identify questions to advance student thinking Reengage with students (with a colleague observing if possible) Review outcomes and notes from the observation and plan next steps As we engage across the year, we will each be doing bridge to practice exercises with students between sessions. This is found in your handbook on Page 5. The continuous improvement cycle is the backbone of the bridge to practice exercises we will all engage in as part of this content across the year. Bridges to practice essentially extend the learning from the training sessions to our classrooms by allowing us to give it a go with students. After trying out some of the instructional lessons with students, we will analyze what worked and what gaps we saw. Then, we will make some modifications, try again, and come back together with other teachers to discuss our lessons learned. Those lessons learned will inform how we engage with students next. From here, the cycle repeats. (2 min)

Materials Everyone will have a spiral bound handbook—Participant Packet, either Math or Literacy. All materials we experience in training are posted on Username: tneducation Password: fastestimproving (read through this) (1 min)

Norms for our Training Keep students at the center-of focus & decision making. Be present and engaged- limit distractions, if urgent matters come up, step outside. Monitor airtime and share your voice- you’ll know which applies to you! Challenge with respect- disagreement can be healthy, respect all intentions. Be solutions oriented- for the good of the group, look for the possible. Risk productive struggle- this is safe space to get out of your comfort zone. Balance urgency and patience- we need to see dramatic change and change will happen over time. SAY: Before we begin on this content, we will set norms for how we will engage over the next few days. Please take a minute to read through our norms for our time to yourself. (2 minutes) Does anyone have anything they’d like to add to make the most of our time together?
