2 Unit 6 Vocabulary Adversary- someone who offers opposition to someone else. The two teams were adversaries of each other. Ardor- feelings of great warmth and intensity. The couple’s ardor for one another was evident in the loving glances they shared. Mediation- the act of intervening to bring about a settlement. The divorcing couple were able to come to mediation in their divorce settlement. Sage- having wisdom that comes with experience. The older couple gave the newlyweds sage advice. Avowal- a statement asserting the truth of something. When the immigrant was granted citizenship, he made an avowal of loyalty to his new country.

Titanic- of great force or power. The earthquake had titanic force to it. Foreboding- a feeling of evil to come. The dark clouds are a foreboding of the storm that is soon to come. Invoke- request earnestly; ask for aid or protection. The pastor invokes God to heal those who are sick or hurting. Grapple- the act of engaging in close hand-to-hand combat. MMA fighters practice grappling in preparation for their fights. Appease- cause to be more favorably inclined; gain the good will of. When the husband forgot his wife’s birthday, he tried to appease her by buying her favorite flowers.

Commandeer- take arbitrarily or by force. The pirates tried to commandeer the smaller ship. Adversity- a state of misfortune or affliction. The football team faced adversity after losing a few games. Restitution- a sum of money paid in compensation for loss or injury. The town paid the family restitution after their grandfather passed away. Tithe- an offering of a tenth part of some personal income. In church, people will tithe in order to give back. Lavish- bestow or expend profusely. During the summer, many celebrities will hold lavish parties at their expensive homes.

Pliant- capable of being shaped or bent or drawn out. The metal for the car was quite pliant. Tremulous- quivering as from weakness or fear. Because her hands are too tremulous to hold a spoon steady, she has to drink soup from a cup. Revelry- unrestrained merrymaking. The winner of the lottery was exhausted after enjoying a night of celebratory revelry. Assuage- provide physical relief, as from pain. He tried to assuage the guilt of wrongdoing by doing something right. Profusion- the property of being extremely abundant. In the summer, my dog is always covered with a profusion of fleas.
