1. David Bates His Artwork is Based on Everyday Life

We are going to study David Bates today. He is from Texas, and it took him a while to figure out he wanted to be an artist. He studied art in college, but then from there joined the navy, worked as a photographer and then became a computer programmer for more than 20 years. He returned to the art world in 1992, and has now been painting for almost 20 years. He is now almost 60 years old, and still living in Texas.
He now is a fan of “Folk Art” or paintings of “everyday life” – Everyday life could be a picture of you guys sitting at your desk….or kids playing on a playground….or a person walking their dog down the street. He liked to paint things that he saw happen around him. Can you guys come up with some examples of “everyday life” that he could paint?
As we have seen with all of our artists this year, he used lines, shapes, colors and textures to create each of his paintings….As long as we know what each of these things are, we can create our own art masterpiece!

2. Bates’ Ed Walker Cleaning Fish 1982
Here is an example of David Bates work….and a good example of what you are going to do today. On the left you can see a pencil sketch that David made of a man cleaning fish. On the right, he added color and texture to the painting. So lets talk about lines, shapes, color and texture….
Where did the artist use lines in this picture? Look at the shirt and the pants, the lines he drew could be wrinkles in his clothes, or even seams in his shirt. He also used lines in the background to create a wood wall, or a box….
What about color…can you see any places where he used a different color to maybe show a shadow (pants, in the trees) in the ground
And Shapes….pick out some shapes that he used….where do you see circles? Any squares?
And texture, if you could touch the ground in this picture…how would it feel? How did Bates draw it to make it look like this (used different colors, used a bunch of dots or small circles)
For your art masterpiece you are going to do the same thing….you will be drawing a picture with a pencil, and then you will be adding colors, textures, shapes and lines to create detail on your picture.

3. Bates’ Rodeo
Here is another picture of Bates….What is this a picture of?
If you could reach in and touch that bull, what would it feel like? How did David create fur on the bull?
What about his boots or his belt…how do you think those would feel? You see, David just used different lines and shapes to create a texture in this painting…that is how you can guess how these things would feel.

4. Bates’ Feeding the Dogs
This is the painting we are going to study today, and this is our inspiration for our art masterpiece project today. I love this painting because it is a very good example of how an artist takes basic lines, colors and shapes to create a masterpiece….Bates used tons of shapes to create this drawing…what do you guys see? There are circles and squares all over the place. Show me some different places where you see how he used squares….what about circles?
This drawing has 5 different dogs, they look like the same basic shape, but how did Bates make them all look different? (color – each dog has its own color pattern, textures – one dog looks to have long hair, and he used different colors to make it look shaggy) If you could reach out and pet the brown dog, what would it feel like? What about the black dog in the front…do you think it has long or short hair?
Lets look at the man’s jacket…how did Bates create this trim on the jacket (lines and color make this trim on his jacket stand out from the rest of his jacket…..) What about his shirt….how did he create this pattern?
All right, so you guys are going to create a similar picture…you are going to draw a picture of you feeding a pet….It can be a pet of your own like a dog, cat, fish, or even a guinea pig….or it can be a picture of you feeding a pet that you might want some time like a shark, lion, snake, or any other pet you may want to draw.

5. It Is Your Turn! Create a Dog Food Lunch Bag!
Write your name on the back of your bag.
Using glue sticks, assemble your dog.
Use markers to color your dog’s eyes
Name your dog.
I want you guys to remember Bates’ painting…I want to see patterns on your clothes or in the background…I want you to draw texture so I can guess how your pet would feel if I could reach in and pet your animal.
