Energy saving for solid walls with Si-Dry
2
Saving money with Si-Dry
A dry wall is a warm wall. A study by English Heritage showed that dry walls are up to 3 times better at keeping heat in than wet walls. Si-Dry is a deeply-penetrating, colourless waterproof coating that keeps walls dry – which means they keep heat in – saving energy – and saving you money.
3
35% of heat loss occurs through uninsulated walls.
The problem: 35% of heat loss occurs through uninsulated walls. Up to 35% heat loss through uninsulated walls
4
Traditional Solution:
Insulation Effective but expensive, disfiguring, and unsuitable for damp walls.
5
Si-Dry solution: Utilise the natural insulation qualities of the masonry by keeping it dry.
6
Have the potential to be great insulators...
Masonry walls: Have the potential to be great insulators... Solid masonry walls are typically 9 inches thick – considerably thicker than most insulation materials …but only when dry.
7
Insulation dampness problems:
8
Let heat escape… …just like wet clothes.
Wet walls Let heat escape… …just like wet clothes.
9
Pores in masonry: Stop heat escaping when dry, but allow heat to escape when filled with moisture
10
A dry wall is a warm wall:
An English Heritage study showed wet walls conducted 1.5 to 3 times as much heat as dry walls.
11
Making walls warm and dry with Si-Dry
12
What is Si-Dry? Si-Dry is a breathable, silicone based cream that is applied to masonry by brush, roller, or spray. It penetrates deeply into the masonry producing a colourless water-repellent layer Key features: Water-repellent Colourless Breathable Deeply-penetrating Long-lasting (>20 years)
13
Penetrates into masonry to make it water-repellent

14
Deeply penetrating: In-depth protection – bridges minor imperfections in masonry and increases service life
15
Tested to BS EN ISO 15148:2002 on brick, sandstone and mortar.
Suitable for brick, mortar & sandstone Tested to BS EN ISO 15148:2002 on brick, sandstone and mortar. Note: Not suitable for Limestone. Your Si-Dry contractor will be able to provide an alternative treatment for Limestone using Si-Dry LS Liquid
16
Will not change the natural appearance of masonry
Colourless: Will not change the natural appearance of masonry Unlike alternative masonry treatments, Si-Dry will not permanently darken masonry or leave a glossy sheen. A small inconspicuous test treatment will be carried out by your Si-Dry contractor and some surface darkening will occur whilst Si-Dry penetrates the masonry – however this will fade over time
17
Breathable: Very low reduction in breathability (<10%) when tested to BS EN ISO 12572:2001) Breathability is important as it moisture already in the wall to dry out – allowing the energy-saving benefits of Si-Dry to be achieved more quickly
18
How much energy will I save?
19
30% Typical energy saving:
Is around 30%, but actual energy saving will vary depending on local weather and wall type. 30%
20
Rainfall is above average
Maximum energy savings occur where: Rainfall is above average Walls are constructed from porous bricks/stone
21
So potential heat savings are highest in these areas.
Northern and western areas have highest rainfall: So potential heat savings are highest in these areas.
22
Have the highest potential energy saving
Porous bricks and stone: Have the highest potential energy saving The air pockets in porous masonry act as insulators – but only when dry. Once moisture has entered these air pockets most of the insulation properties are lost. Treating with Si-Dry prevents this from happening – resulting in significant energy savings. Your Si-Dry Approved Contractor can test the porosity of your masonry using a Karsten tube
23
How long will Si-Dry last?
24
Si-Dry has a life expectancy of over 20 years based on:
Field experience with older-generation silicone water repellents Accelerated aging tests
25
Si-O bonds in Si-Dry’s active ingredients are much more resistant to UV light than other types of water-repellent. UV-resistance is a key factor in providing long-term water-resistance as without it the water-repellent effect will be destroyed by sunlight
26
Accelerated aging using an industry standard QLab QUV SE
No reduction in water-repellency after 2000 hours extreme UV exposure
27
Depth of penetration means most of the treated zone (i. e
Depth of penetration means most of the treated zone (i.e. deeper than 2mm) is never exposed to sunlight
