Do Now: Think, Pair, Share
Do Now: Think, Pair, Share. With a shoulder partner, discuss the following: Use the terms phenotype and genotype in a complete sentence. Two Three Four Explain where the alleles for a given trait are inherited from. Contrast homozygous and heterozygous How many alleles control a Mendelian trait, such as pea seed color? Describe how the genotypes RR and Rr result in the same phenotype One

Do Now Review Use the terms phenotype and genotype in a complete sentence. Answers may vary. Possible answer: An organism’s alleles, or genotype, for a trait determines the physical expression of the trait, or its phenotype. Contrast homozygous and heterozygous A homozygous genotype has two of the same alleles; a herterozygous genotype has two different alleles How many alleles control a Mendelian trait, such as pea seed color? One Two Three Four Explain where the alleles for a given trait are inherited from. One allele is inherited from the father, and one allele is inherited from the mother. Describe how the genotypes RR and Rr result in the same phenotype If the allele R is dominant, then RR and Rr would have the same phenotype.

Pedigree Review – Problem 1
The ability to roll your tongue is caused by a dominant gene (R). If you can NOT roll your tongue, you are a non-roller and must be homozygous recessive (rr). Scenario: A father can NOT roll his tongue but a mother can. Of their four children, one daughter can NOT roll her tongue. The other daughter and both sons can roll their tongues.

Pedigree Review – Problem 2
For hair color in dogs, black fur (B) is dominant over brown fur (b). Mr. Santos’s female dog, Momo, has black fur. Momo breeds with a male dog with brown fur and has 4 puppies. The oldest puppy is a female with brown fur. The youngest puppy is a female with black fur. The two middle puppies are males with black fur.
