Commander in chief Foreign policy leader Chief agenda setter Unofficial Roles Chief of state Party leader Chief citizen MAIN IDEA: The Constitution gives only a brief description of the president’s qualifications and powers. Yet the job is vast and complex, as the president must fill many roles.

6 Election to Office We do not directly elect the president/v.p.
Framers created the Electoral College due to the idea that public could not make a wise choice Electoral college has 538 electors, equal to 435 representatives, 100 senators, plus 3 from DC.

7 The Powers of the Presidency
Executive Powers: appoint/removal 3k people (cannot fire federal judges), executive orders-have the force of law, executive privilege-refuse information Diplomatic and Military Powers: diplomatic-power to negotiate treaties but congress must approve, unless exec. Agreement (NAFTA), military-president-200 times, congress- 5. Legislative and Judicial Powers: pres has powers due to checks and balances, can intro legislation and veto, appoints fed judges/justices, can issue reprieves, pardons, amnesty, commute Informal Powers: media access and party leader Checks on Pres Powers: formal checks-pres actions subject to judicial review Clinton v. City of New York, (no line item veto), informal-media scrutiny Changes: power has increased due to the growth of the government and nation as a world power MAIN IDEA: The powers of the presidency, outlined in Article II of the Constitution, are vast and have grown throughout the history of the United States. They are, however checked by the other branches of governenment.

8 The President’s Administration
The Executive Office of the President works closely with the president to determine domestic, economic, and foreign policy. The role of the vice president has grown a great deal. Nine vice presidents have had to assume the title of president when the position has been left vacant. Over the years, the cabinet has increased in size, and presidents have varied in how much they rely on the cabinet for counsel. MAIN IDEA: The president leads a large team of people who help carry out the duties of the office. This team includes a staff of advisers, the vice president, and members of the cabinet.
