1 The Smart Party

2 What is Smart Party? Imagine rooms with music, guests with media devices. Music in each room comes from guest’s media library and preferences. Smart Party tracks location, tailors music to guests currently in room.

3 What am I doing? Currently songs are chosen in a round-robin fashion
Each user picks one song from library at random We can do better! We can please more people more of the time!

4 Voting Algorithm Voting algorithm works in simulation
Implement voting algorithm in Smart Party application. Next user nominates a song Others vote based on their preferences Result: More users like the music playing This should definitely be done by the end of fall quarter. Preference data used possibly includes number of times played, number of times skipped, 1-5 star rating by user, recently played, date added, etc.

5 Testing & Analysis Design test environment using limited hardware resources Currently, 3 rooms are set up, 3 laptops participate Need to virtualize to better test voting Create metric of user satisfaction based on individual preferences Compare user satisfaction under voting algorithm with round-robin selection. Localization info would be passed directly to each virtual device, since actual localization couldn’t be done (we don’t have 10 wireless interfaces on one laptop).

6 Checkpoints 2 quarter project By end of 1st quarter
Voting algorithm implemented in Smart Party Progress on building test environment By end of 2nd quarter Tested and revised voting algorithm implementation Data showing increased user satisfaction This is not an extremely aggressive plan. Professor Reiher and I agree that we will start off with a small piece, and if we make quick progress, I can bite off another element of Smart Party. I could design and implement some new feature. Possibilities include rotating music control (picking a DJ for a song or two) or using Smart Party with video.
