1664: King Charles II sent a naval force to conquer New Netherland
New Netherland surrendered peacefully due to a weak militia
Charles brother, James, The Duke of York (later King James II) became the proprietor of the colony and named it New York in 1685

New Jersey was awarded to a group of people following the conquest of New Netherland in 1664
William Penn, John Lord Berkeley, Sir Philip Carteret
They struggled to control the colony due to it’s diversity and was eventually taken over by the King.

11. Pennsylvania Founded by Quaker William Penn
Wanted to create a colony for Quakers
Quakers were hated in England and persecuted for their beliefs
Established Philadelphia “The City of Brotherly Love”
Welcomed people of multiple religions to settle
Presbyterians, Baptists, Anglicans, Catholics

12. Quakers Quakers were a “Society of Friends” Didn’t believe in weapons
Treated Native Americans as equals
Were tolerant of other religions
