Figure 1 Knockdown of NMDA Receptors Limits Synaptic Changes in the STN after Dopamine Loss Following 6-OHDA dopamine lesion, there is an NMDA-receptor-dependent decrease in hyperdirect cortico-STN inputs and an increase in inputs from the globus pallidus externus (GPe). Dendrites of STN neurons also have decreased spine number and dendritic complexity. Knockdown of NMDA receptors can rescue decreased cortico-STN input and GPe hyperconnectivity, rebalancing the excitation and inhibition in STN neurons.
