Approaches Statistical Approach
Behavior that deviates from the average Uses a numbers approach Mainly uses social behavior as its indicator Could differ based on culture or era

Emotions, inappropriate learning, distorted thoughts, inadequate relationships Looks closer at personality and what is considered normal

Classifications Most common way to classify Mental Disorders is the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) Defines disorder based on “symptoms” Wide ranging system that can encompass many areas Used to seek out proper “treatment”
