Shows how bad of an influence Cleopatra is on Anthony.
Chapter Summary Cleopatra plans to go to war alongside Anthony Enobarbus is against this Cleopatra disregards his opinions Hear news of Ceaser taking Toryne Anthony wants to fight Ceaser at sea. Camidus and Anthony’s soldier warn Anthony to battle on land Will only do so if they lose the sea battle Camidus and the soldier complain about Anthony’s foolishness They prepare for land battle while putting most of their forces at sea Basically: Shows how bad of an influence Cleopatra is on Anthony.

Women during the time: Second class - not allowed to vote, not taken seriously “Thou hast forsake my being in these wars” Weren’t meant to lead: “… we are women’s men” Cleopatra BREAKS them. Goes to war - backs up Roman rumours Disregards Roman criticisms and ideals “Sink Rome, and their tongues rot. That speak against us!” Dominance “I have sixty sails, Ceaser none better.” “… my kingdom will.” “I will not stay behind.” Repetition of the word “will” shows determination & dominance “… Phontinus, an eunuch, and your maids manage this war.” Hyperbole Shows how serious her frustration and anger is Emphasises her superiority over men

Private Life vs. Public Duty
Anthony Anthony’s devotion interferes with his duties: “By sea, what else?” Refuses to follow advice of Camidus and his soldier. Enobarbus’ speech “Your ships are not well manned…” Ignorant - “By sea, by sea.” “I’ll fight at sea” Mostly 10 syllables - signifies structure

Opens with honesty “I will be even with thee, doubt it not.” Revelations Closes with ignorance “… and fighting foot to foot” “Well, well away!” Unwilling to listen
