Week 10 Vocab Definitions
2
Co-dominant allele Both phenotypes are dominant and the phenotype shows expression of BOTH alleles together Incomplete dominance Neither phenotype is dominant. The heterozygous individual expresses a “blend” of the traits. Multiple alleles More than two different alleles are possible in the population for a given trait. (i.e. Blood grouping)
3
Polygenic inheritance
The pattern of inheritance where two or more genes control a trait that represents a range of outcomes Pedigree A chart which tells all of the known phenotypes for an organism, its ancestors, and its offspring Carrier An unaffected heterozygous organism that can pass on a recessive allele for a disorder to its offspring
4
Gene therapy Inserting working copies of a gene into someone with a non-working copy so the correct protein can be made. Transgenic organism An organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques
5
Restriction Enzyme An enzyme that cuts double-stranded DNA Human Genome The sequencing of the approximately 40,000 genes on the 46 chromosomes
