Provide one reason why this is a good or bad practice for a politician to utilize. Review major ideas from Thursday’s close reading and fill in the main idea of the article mentioned in read one. Use information discussed in the review to complete the Winthrop Sullivan comparison from last class. Complete the third and fourth read question and discussion question. 3 Discussion Question: Manifest Destiny and City on a hill
Reread Sullivan quotes in paragraphs one and two. What is Sullivan implying about American expansion? Can any foreign power stop U.S. expansion? Based on these answers write the main idea of Sullivan’s view of Manifest Destiny in the box. Review Winthrop’s quote (in bold) about a city on a hill. Discuss with seatmate the benefits and limitations of building on a hill. Relate what you discuss to Winthrop’s vision for America. Compare and Contrast Manifest Destiny and City on a Hill. How are these views similar? In what way do these views differ?

4 Third Read Review paragraphs 3 and 4.
What two authors mentioned in this section held similar views to Sullivan’s about America’s future greatness? How did American frontiersmen embody this ideal? Use textual examples.

5 Fourth read Review Paragraph 5
List the major groups who were excluded from the Manifest Destiny vision for America.

6 Discussion Question Manifest Destiny today
Fill in the blanks and put at the top of the box: Supporters of Manifest Destiny believe ___ about America’s future but __ were not included in this vision of the nation’s future. Think of two examples of current political rhetoric (written or spoken ideas) or debates that like Manifest Destiny argue that America has a special place in the world that only Americans can benefit from. Give me two reasons why you think this.

7 Summary question How was Manifest Destiny expressed in the writings and actions of Sullivan, various frontiersmen, and church leaders of their time? How has rhetoric of American “manifest destiny” impacted contemporary political debate?
