3 Tomorrow: Socratic Seminar
Socrates believed that enabling learners to think for themselves was more important than filling their heads with “right answers.” He stressed the importance of asking and answering questions as the true sign of learning and knowledge.

4 What is a Socratic Seminar?
Discussion in which… The text is being considered Questions are being raised A leader helps move the discussion forward Many participants pose and answer questions Usually minutes long NOT a debate

5 Debate vs. Dialogue Debate... Dialogue...
defends thinking to show that it is right expects others’ reflections will improve their own thinking calls for investing in one’s beliefs is temporarily suspending one’s beliefs searches for weaknesses searches for strengths rebuts contrary positions and may devalue others respects others and seeks not to alienate assumes a single right answer assumes that cooperation can lead to greater understanding demands a conclusion remains open-ended

6 The Rules Speak so that all can hear you. Listen closely.
Take notes (especially the outer circle). Speak without raising hands. Refer to the text. Talk to each other and to the circle – not the teacher. Don’t stay confused – ask for clarification. Invite and allow others to speak. Use only respectful, accountable talk. Know that you are responsible for the quality of the seminar.
