How many of you eat salmon. How many fish traditionally
How many of you eat salmon? How many fish traditionally? How many commercial fish? How many of you are connected to salmon?

THE SOLUTION? Update the Law
14
Creates enforceable habitat protection standards
PROTECT SALMON Creates enforceable habitat protection standards To identify important habitat characteristics, like water quality, instream flow levels, fish passage, and riparian areas that need to be maintained to protect and support the sustainability of Alaska’s fisheries.
15
Clarify ADF&G’s authority to protect fish habitat to all
SIMPLIFY THE PROCESS Clarify ADF&G’s authority to protect fish habitat to all anadromous (salmon-bearing) waters in the state. Currently, the law only applies to waters that are listed in the state Anadromous Waters Catalog. Less than 50% of salmon-bearing waters are listed which means fish habitat for many important salmon populations is left unprotected.
16
GIVE ALASKANS A VOICE Gives Alaskans a voice in the permitting process by providing public notice and an opportunity to participate in important decisions that may harm fish habitat and Alaska wild salmon.
17
PROVIDE CERTAINTY Promotes responsible development by requiring projects to avoid or minimize adverse impacts to fish habitat before a permit is issued and by preventing development activities that will substantially damages fish habitat and threaten the sustainability of our fisheries.
18
HOW DOES THIS AFFECT TRIBES?
Not about allocation No changes to permits for hunting, fishing Protecting our salmon means that we’ll have more salmon: adding to the pot for everyone Gives tribes the opportunity to weigh in on development projects in their region

FUTURE GENERATIONS

GIVE ALASKANS A VOICE Tribes have “managed” our salmon habitat and ensured that it remains healthy for 10,000 years In the current permitting process for development in salmon habitat, there is not a clear way for comment from tribes or individuals in the area Ensures that permitting agencies take into consideration our voices on what happens in our areas

WHERE ARE WE NOW?

WHAT CAN YOU DO?
