Using Scientific Notation
SCIENTIFIC NOTATION is a method of expressing very large and very small numbers as a product of a number greater than or equal to 1 and less than 10, and a power of 10. It is expressed in the form: πΓ ππ π , πππππ πβ€π<ππ Example: π.ππΓ ππ π A number β₯ 1 and < 10 A power of 10
4
Standard Notation When a number is written out the ordinary way, it is called STANDARD NOTATION. Example: Standard Notation: πππ,πππ Scientific Notation: π.ππΓ ππ π
5
Scientific Notation Examples: 3,780,000,000,000 = 0.00000064 =
12 jumps left = 7 jumps right
6
Large Numbers 46,000,000 = 620,000,000,000 = Small Numbers 0.000538 =
7 jumps left 620,000,000,000 = 11 jumps left Small Numbers = 4 jumps right = 6 jumps right
7
Write using scientific notation. 1) 63,000 4) 0.00087
4 jumps left 4 jumps right 2) 7,245,000 5) 6 jumps left 5 jumps right 3) 50,000,000,000 6) 10 jumps left 7 jumps right
8
Write each number in standard form.
1) 4) 3.6 3.41 360,000 2) 5) 8.43 4 400,000,000 3) 6) 2.64 7 2,640,000,000
