Questions 15. What was done in the synagogue services? 16. What was requested of Paul and his company by the rulers of the synagogue? 17. To whom does Paul direct his speech? Their practice was to read from the law and the prophets (v. 15) They were asked if they had “any word of exhortation for the people” (v. 15) Paul started with, “Men of Israel, and ye that fear God” (v. 16) and also “Brethren, children of the stock of Abraham, and those among you that fear God” (v. 26)

Questions 18. Relate the historical facts of Paul’s discourse. a. Who else have we read about in Acts that related similar history? 19. What compliment did God bestow upon one of the kings? 20. What did Jesus bring to Israel? 21. What did the rulers in Jerusalem reject, but also fulfill? Paul summarizes the departure from Egypt, the conquering of the Promised Land, and the significant leaders of Israel until David showing that the messiah would come through him. He then shows that Jesus is that promised one but was killed by the Jews in Jerusalem. He cites a few OT prophesies of the messiah as proof of Jesus’ authenticity. (vv ) A more comprehensive history was also used by Stephen in Acts 7, and a brief summary of the prophecies was given by Peter in Acts 3. David was cited as “a man after My heart” (v. 22) Salvation (v. 23) They rejected Jesus and by doing this, and killing him, they “fulfilled all things that were written of him” (vv )

Questions 22. What was done with Jesus when they had fulfilled all things that were written of him? 23. What did God do with Jesus and how was this proven? 24. What does Paul say they are thus bringing to them? They took Him down from the cross and buried him (v. 29) God raised Him from the dead and he was seen by many witnesses (vv ) “we bring you good tidings of the promise made unto the fathers” (v. 32)

Questions 25. What two psalms does Paul mention that the resurrection of Christ fulfilled? a. Where else have we studied in Acts of this psalm being mentioned in connection with the resurrection of Christ? 26. What happened to David that did not happen to the one that God raised up? 27. What is proclaimed through this one? Psalms 2:7 (v. 33; cf. Hebrews 1:5; cf. Hebrews 5:5) and Psalms 16:10 (v. 35) Acts 2:27 “fell asleep, and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption” (v. 36) “through this man is proclaimed unto you remission of sins” (v. 38)

Questions 28. What is accomplished "by him" that could not be accomplished under the law? 29. Of what were they to "beware" and what passage does Paul quote? 30. What request did the crowd make of them? Who followed them and what did they urge them to do? Who gathered together the next sabbath and why? “every one that believeth is justified from all things” (v. 39) They needed to beware that they also did not refuse to believe in Jesus; Paul quotes Habakkuk 1:5 (vv ) They wanted to hear the gospel again the next sabbath (v. 42) Many of the Jews and devout proselytes followed them; Paul and Barnabas “urged them to continue in the grace of God” (v. 43) Almost the whole city was gathered to hear the word of God (v. 44)

Questions 33. What reaction did this receive of the Jews?
“they were filled with jealousy, and contradicted the things which were spoken by Paul, and blasphemed” (v. 45) (see ESV “reviling him”). “Blaspheme” is not necessarily a speaking against God, though it is used that way numerous times in the NT (cf. Mark 3:29). It is also used to indicate “speaking evil” (cf. I Peter 4:4) of someone or to “revile/rail on” one (cf. Matthew 27:39; cf. Mark 15:29)
