In consuming popular music the individual is free to choose, not only between various musical styles and attendant visual images, but also how such choices are lived out and what they are made to stand for. Moreover, in choosing certain musical styles and visual images, the forms of association and social gatherings in which young people become involved are not rigidly bound into a ‘subcultural’ community but rather assume a more fluid, neo-tribal character.
