In young sepals with no ROS accumulation (stage 5, S5), cells grow according to the spatiotemporal averaging model. At stage 10 (S10), ROS (yellow or yellow stars) start to accumulate in cells at the tip, promoting maturation and termination of growth (indicated by the blue cells with thick borders). ROS accumulation progresses toward the base, spreading to the whole sepal at maturity (S14). In the ftsh4 mutant, organ geometry is irregular from S5 onward, when prematurely produced ROS inhibit growth, decreasing local spatial variability and final uniformity in organ size and shape. Different levels of growth rate and ROS are shown in color gradients, and cell wall stiffness is indicated by cell border thickness (the thicker the border, the stiffer the cells).
