4 Adolescence and Puberty
Adolescence is often defined as a period of transition- why? It is an important status change following the onset of puberty during which the young person develops from a child to an adult. How can we define puberty? A period of rapid growth during which young people reach sexual maturity and become biologically able to reproduce. Secondary sexual characteristics develop. Puberty in girls starts between years old (though it can be earlier.) Boys start puberty later, between years old.

5 Primary and Secondary Sexual Characteristics
What physical developments are vital for sexual reproduction? How do you show the world that you have these physical characteristics? Primary Sexual Characteristics Secondary Sexual Characteristics Present at birth and develop during puberty. Males: Females: Develop during puberty and distinguish the sexes. Outward signs of sexual maturity. Add notes to booklet page 8-9

6 The Role of Hormones Hormones are responsible for the changes that occur during puberty. Use page 8 of the textbook to label this diagram in your files. You should include: Which gland is found in this area? What hormone is produced? What is it responsible for?

7 Research: Use the laptops to research this question: ‘Is puberty getting earlier?’ Find out what environmental influences are having an impact on physical development e.g. improvements in diet and increased body weight. Write a summary of your findings in your files.

8 Check your understanding:
Can you… Define adolescence and puberty? Explain the difference between primary and secondary sexual characteristics? Explain the role of sex hormones in puberty? Explain why puberty is happening earlier in modern society?
