1 VOLCANOES CH. 3.1 Volcano (3:08) Volcano Eruption (1:40)

2 Intro: What is a Volcano?
1. A molten mixture of rock-forming substances, gases and water from the mantle is _magma__. 2. When magma reaches the surface it is called _lava__.

3

4 I. Volcanoes and Plate Boundaries
A. What is the Ring of Fire?  a major volcanic belt that rims the Pacific Ocean  B. Volcanic belts form along the boundaries of Earth’s _plates_. C. Most volcanoes form along _diverging_ plate boundaries such as _mid__ - _ocean_ ridge.

5

6 Volcanoes D. Volcanoes also form along _diverging_ plate boundaries where _subduction_ takes place. E. Diverging Boundaries 1. Ridges are long _underwater_ mountain ranges that sometimes have a _rift_ _valley_ at the center. Brain Pop: Volcanoes

7

8 F. Converging Boundaries
1. Volcanoes form where two __oceanic_ plates _collide_ or where oceanic meets _continental__ plates. 2. The volcanoes form a string of islands called an __island_ _arc_.

9

10 II. Hot Spot Volcanoes A. Some volcanoes form along __hot_ _spots__ in the Earth’s mantle. Volcano erupting (1:24)

11 Hot Spot Volcanoes B. What is a hot spot = an area where material from deep within the mantle rises and melts forming magma C. Where can you find a hot spot? 1. Hawaiian Islands 2. Yellowstone National Park Old Faithful, a geyser hot springs Volcano Song (3:45) Magma Rising (3:07)
