Step One - Obtain a FSA ID Step Two – Complete your FAFSA on the Web Step Three – Complete the NYS TAP Application

3 Step One – FSA ID www.fsaid.ed.gov
Can be done at any time - recommend applying in September/October Be sure to remember your FSA ID and write it down in a safe place. Student and at least one parent need FSA ID’s Use two separate addresses

4 Step Two – Complete the FAFSA
Free Application for Federal Student Aid Available starting October 1st, 2018

5 What information do I need to complete the FAFSA?
The FAFSA is based off of the tax year. Parent Federal Taxes Student Federal Taxes W-2 forms Try to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to link your tax information from the IRS directly into the FAFSA form.

6 Additional Information needed
Asset information – savings, checking, stocks, bonds, etc. How many people live in the household? How many children will be in college?

7 What is the Expected Family Contribution (EFC)
Amount family can reasonably be expected to contribute Stays the same regardless of college Calculated using data from a federal application form and a federal formula

8 Common Federal Aid Programs
Federal Pell Grant Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education Grant (TEACH) Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant Federal Work-Study Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans PLUS Loans

9 Step Three – Complete the TAP Application
Only if you are attending a college in NYS. Combined net taxable NYS Income is under $80,000 Can complete right after the FAFSA or at a later time.

10 NYS Programs Both have household income requirements
Excelsior Scholarship Program - Full time SUNY and CUNY in-state students Enhanced Tuition Awards Program - Max $6000 at participating in-state degree granting private colleges

11 Scholarships Scholarships through Colleges
Outside Private Scholarships - - Check with Guidance Counselor - Local Stores, Community Centers - Community Foundation of Greater Buffalo

12 Private Sources Foundations, businesses, charitable organizations
Deadlines and application procedures vary widely Begin researching private aid sources early

13 Timeline September/October – Apply for FSA ID
October/November - Complete FAFSA/TAP December - February– Start to receive Fin Aid packages from schools. May 1st – Common deadline to deposit at a school.
