Kitchen Safety

Knives Always cut away from you. Pay attention to where the edge of the knife is pointing. If you drop a knife, NEVER try to catch it! Our instincts are to catch it, but it could really hurt you! Wash knives separately. Do not put them in the sink with all of the other dirty dishes.

Stovetop The pan’s handle should always be turned to the side (but not over another burner that is on) or back of the stove. It should NEVER stick out over the floor. They can snag on clothing and get spilled. Do not leave paper towels, paper, or towels near the stovetop as they can catch fire easily!

Microwave NEVER put metal/foil in the microwave! It will spark and could catch fire! Always use oven mitts when getting anything out of the microwave. Even after as little as 30 seconds, food and equipment get hot!

Kitchen Electricity Do not use appliances near the sink or other water. If one falls in, it can electrocute anyone nearby. NEVER clean any appliance while it’s plugged in! Do not plug in the appliance until you are ready to use it

Steam NEVER use a wet/damp potholder to pick up something hot! Do this will get you steam burned. Remove the cover of a pot away from you so the rising steam doesn’t scald you.

FIRE!!! If a pan catches on fire: Don’t move it!
Don’t throw water on it! Run a cloth under the tap water, wring it out, And cover the flaming pan

Oven ALWAYS use oven mitts every time you put something IN or OUT of the oven! Anytime your hands are going in the oven they need to be protected!! When you take a hot pan out of the oven, place it on the stovetop if it is cool or on trivet

Odd and Ends… Do not put hot objects in the sink to be washed.
You must have hair pulled back No horse playing in the kitchen Clean up all spills and mess
