3 Starter: Use Figures 5.2 & 5.3 (page 142/143) to describe how the population of Lympstone and Toxteth has changed since Add this to your A3 mind map. Why do you think this population increase has happened? Think back to the past characteristics of each place – how would these have led to population increase? Workers attracted to job opportunities in Toxteth and Liverpool so in- migration. These people would have been “fertile age” – what does this mean? Leading to natural increase.increased importance of tourism in Lympstone so in-migration. As these local economies grew – so did the population and vice versa.

4 Explaining the Identity of Lympstone and Toxteth
Learning Objective To examine how present day demographic characteristics are shaping the identities of Lympstone and Toxteth. All the following tasks should be completed on A4 or A3 mind map using the learning objective as a title in the middle of mind map and the appropriate sun-headings.

5 Demographic profile: Age
Study the demographic characteristics above. Describe the age-structure for both Lympstone and Toxteth – support with evidence. How do they compare to the national average? Why does Lympstone have an ageing population? Why does Toxteth have a much larger independent working population?

6 Demographic profile: Ethnicity
Compare and contrast the ethnic composition of Lympstone and Toxteth. Why do you think Lympstone is predominantly white? Why do you think Toxteth has a much more diverse ethnic mix?

7 Demographic profile: Socio-economic profile
Housing tenure; car availability and education are all good indicators of what? What in turn does this have a direct effect on an why? Use table 5.2 to compare and contrast the socio-economic profile of Lympstone and Toxteth. How do these places compare to the national average? Can you explain these differences?

Use the neighbourhood statistics website to find out more information about Lympstone and Toxteth in terms of their demographic profile. Use the following website to find some in formation on crime data for each place.
