1.4 The Associative Properties
Objective (things to learn): How to evaluate expressions involving parentheses. Similar to the commutative property, the associative property only applies to addition and multiplication. It’s easy!!! Just remember, that with the associative property the grouping symbols can move anywhere without changing the value of the expression. LOOK Algebra 1c

1.4 The Associative Properties
Examples Calculate. 1 (2 + 5)2 = 72 = 49 Recall: Always do parentheses first (5 2)2 = 102 = 100 . 2 Algebra 1c

1.4 The Associative Properties
Examples Evaluate each expression. 1 (6x)2 – 10 for x = 1 = (6 1)2 – 10 = = 36 – 10 = 26 . 2 (10 + y)(x – 3) for y = 2 and x = 5 = (10 + 2)(5 – 3) = (12)(2) = 24 Algebra 1c

1.4 The Associative Properties
Examples Use the associative property to write an equivalent expression. 1 x + (y + z) = (x + y) + z Recall: The associative property says that you can move the grouping symbols without changing the value of the expression!!!!!! . . . 2 (5 n) m = 5 (nm) Algebra 1c
