Students will understand different properties when combining numbers. Students will demonstrate an algorithm when solving computations.

6 Problem 2.1 pg 32 We will discuss as a class How can you determine if an answer will be positive, negative or zero Positive if both numbers are positive and adding if signs are different and positive number is farther from zero Positive minus a negative Negative if both signs are negative and adding if signs are different and negative number is farther from zero Negative minus a positive Zero We discuss more in the next section but when numbers are the same but signs are opposite for addition Subtract same number from original

Students will demonstrate understanding of additive properties of numbers. Students will demonstrate understanding of absolute value.

9 Problem 2.2 page 37 We will discuss as a class Additive inverse same number different sign their sum would be zero Additive identity zero added to a number doesn’t change the number Absolute Value This is really the distance a number is from zero, distance is always positive, symbol | |, means make any number inside positive, if already positive it doesn’t do anything
