Stalin’s Rise To Power The events we will cover in the next 3 lessons never officially happened. According to official Soviet histories, Stalin became leader of the USSR at the moment of Lenin’s death: ‘1924 was the first year without Lenin. The Communist party and the Soviet people continued their creative work of building socialism under Comrade’s Stalin’s leadership’. However this was far from the truth. From 1924 – 9 a bitter struggle for power engulfed the Communist Party. It was only in 1930, six years after Lenin’s death , that Stalin was publicly recognised as the leader of Russia.

Ever heard of speed dating? How does the process work?

The Communist Party is looking for a new leader and has decided to hold a ‘speed dating’ event to choose a successor to Lenin. Work in groups of 6 and adopt one of the roles below: Interviewer Trotsky Stalin Bukharin Zinoviev Kamenev Interviewer – read p and come up with at least 3 questions for each candidate you’d like to ask them Candidates – read the appropriate section of p and be prepared to explain your background, revolutionary record, relationship with Lenin & party appeal. The activity. Each candidate will be interviewed for 2 minutes before moving on. A bell will signal when your time is up. At the end, when all candidates have been interviewed you will have one last opportunity to criticise your rivals. The interviewer will then decide which candidate is the winner.
