1 Absolutists: Comparisons with P.E.R.S.I.A
By: Stephanie F. Gustave

2 intro Absolutism was a sort of cliche government idea back in the 17th -19th century. In France Louis the XII and XIV, in Russia Ivan the III, IV, and Peter the Great, in Austria at the time it was Leopold I, and more. These leaders all have similar characteristic, but their most distinguishing attribute was that they were all absolutist. There are examples of absolutism in the past that resemble absolutism, and in this presentation I will compare the two with one leader and details about the leader in P.E.R.S.I.A.

3 Charles XII of Sweden (Political)
In 1700, Denmark-Norway, Saxony, and Russia united in an alliance against Sweden Empire Sweden declared war on these three countries. He went against his cousin, Frederick IV of Denmark Charles, with secured the support of England and the Netherlands, closed the Sound and invaded which thwarted Frederick IV’s plans, and after this Charles turned his attention toward August II of Poland and Peter the Great of Russia. He defeated August and put Stanislaw Leszczyński in charge and went after Russia. A fatal mistake, he lost his life on the battlefield.

4 Charles XII of Sweden (Economic)
Under Charles, Sweden was one of the finest arsenals in the world, large standing army, and great fleet. Greatest threat was Russia, who had a larger army, however far behind in both equipment and training. After the Battle of Narva in 1700, one of the first battles of the Great Northern War, most Russia’s army was decimated. This opened a window of opportunity for Sweden, but instead Charles went after King August II of Poland. After success in Poland, Charles went to invade Russia, which lead to defeat and the fall of the Swedish Empire at the Battle of Poltava.

5 Charles XII of Sweden (Religion)
The religion under Charles was christanity, which was introducedto Sweden about 829 by St. Ansgar, but did not fully replace paganism or catch on untill the twelfth century. With Christanization the laws of the country were changed. Making it so that no other deities were worshipped, this law went well into the late 19th century.

6 Charles XII of Sweden (Social)
The social situation in Sweden under Charles was called “domestic levy”. Devised by his father, this system Every province of Sweden (including Finland) should contribute with one or more permanent regiment(s), named after the province itself. Every ten farmsteads had to supply one soldier and all his equipment, including his horse if he was a cavalryman. The soldier should be given a farm-house of his own, so that he could marry, raise children and (at least almost) support his family. The other farmers should pay the soldier for his daily work on the other farms, mostly in kind (grain, meat, and some dairy-products). All regimental officers (from the youngest ensign to the colonel himself) were given farms of their own by the Crown as their salary. (In the coastal areas, ship crews were conscripted in the same way.) This method of raising an army was in force in Sweden until 1901, and the soldier's profession was often inherited as a craft from father to son.

7 Charles XII of Sweden (Intellectual)
I assume the education in Sweden at the time of Charles was an option, because his father, King Charles XI, neglected his own education. Parents would take their children, if they wanted their children to have an education, to the university town and find a tutor of their liking and have them tutor the child. Charles learn Christianity, which at the time was the dominate religion, Latin, Swedish, and German Languages, and arithmetic.

8 Charles XII of Sweden (Arts)
During the time of Charles not much, from what I’ve seen, id made or said about the arts in Sweden.
