3. World anti-doping agency (WADA)
a sport-governing body that promotes and coordinates at the international level the fight against doping in all its forms
through this agency, the Olympic Movement and the world’s public authorities have intensified their efforts to keep drugs out of sport
because new methods of drug testing are continually being developed and current ones improved, athletes who use banned substances and methods run a high risk of detection

4. Drug testing in competitive sports
drug testing in some form occurs in all sports, both in and out of competition, throughout the year
the kinds of drugs that are tested for and the rigour with which they are tested vary by sport
national and international level athletes can be tested anytime, anywhere
in the case of Olympic-level and major international competitions, testing positive for a prohibited substance means automatic disqualification and often more severe penalties, such as being banned from future competition

5. Major Professional Sports Testing / Drug Policy
MLB (failure to comply with testing)
1st strike ( day) - $10,000
2nd strike (50 day) – $25,000
3rd strike (75 day) - $50,000
4th strike (year ) - $100,000
Fail a drug test:
1st time (50 game suspension)
2nd time (100 game suspension)
3rd time (lifetime ban)

6. NFL (16 game regular season)
year round testing for athletes
4 game suspension for use of PED and you must enter the NFL drug rehab program

7. NHL drug testing procedure
1st professional sports organization to negotiate a drug testing policy between the players and owners
Each player could be subjected to 3 “random” drug tests (training camp to the end of the regular season)
1st ( 20 games) + entered in NHL drug program
2nd (60 games)
3rd (permanent suspension) – reinstated after 2 years if approved by committee

8. NBA Reasonable Cause – they can test players
1st year players can be tested up to 3 times/year
Veteran players can be tested ONCE in training camp
1st time ( 5 game) + drug program
2nd time (10 game) + reinstatement to drug program
3rd time (25 game) + reinstatement to drug program

9. NCAA / U sports
Both NCAA / CIS programs test their athletes for use of PED
NCAA will conduct year round random tests for Div I and Div II athletes
Positive test: the student athlete will lose one year of eligibility
Team sports (athlete and team is in jeopardy of losing records/accomplishments obtained in that year)

10. U Sports (CIS)
tests athletes in accordance with the WADA policy for performance enhancing drugs
in and out of competition testing completed.
Waterloo football program suspended for one year after 9 players tested positive

11. The prohibited list
illegal ergogenic substances and techniques are on the Prohibited List
the Prohibited List is the international standard identifying substances and methods prohibited in sport
the International Olympic Committee first began publishing the Prohibited List in 1968
since 2004, WADA has been responsible for updating the list every year

this investigation led to massive changes in the sport world

Opened the door to drug use in sports
World class athletes were named during the investigation:
Marion Jones (2007 admitted to taking steroids, 6 months + community service)
Tim Montgomery (admitted to grand jury of using PED)
Jason Giambi (suspended from baseball for using PED)
Garry Shefield (suspended from baseball for using PED)
Alex Rodriguez (admitted in 2009 of use in 2001 – 2003)

15. What happened?
the secret “designer” drug called the clear was sent to authorities and the steroid was “decoded”
multiple athletes using this clear steroid were “retested” and were suspended for drug use
the 1st time North America was introduced to the science behind “cheating in sport”
