Police Use of Firearms The deployment of AFOs should only be authorised in the following circumstances: where the officer authorising the deployment has reason to suppose that officers may have to protect themselves or others from a person who: is in possession of, or has immediate access to, a firearm or other potentially lethal weapon, or is otherwise so dangerous that the deployment of armed officers is considered to be appropriate, or as an operational contingency in a specific operation (based on the threat assessment), or for the destruction of animals which are dangerous or are suffering unnecessarily.

Firearms Incidents Below map shows in green authorised Firearms operations from 01/01/16 to 30/11/2016, the blue stars represent the last three months (01/12/2016 – 28/02/2017). This map suggests there are no new concentrations of authorised events in Cheshire over the last 3 months when compared to the previous 11 months. For North Wales there have been no authorised events recorded for Wrexham or for much of the coastal areas, whereas there were small concentrations of events in these areas during 2016. All Cheshire LPU areas, with the exception of Chester, Macclesfield and Widnes, have seen increases over the last 12 months. Firearms operations incident clustering for the current period largely correlates with where violent crime concentrations have been mapped. 4 4
