The French Revolution: 1789-1799
Changed almost everything about French Society for a decade. Became even more repressive than the government it replaced. Was eventually taken over by Napoleon Bonaparte. Spread revolutionary ideas around Europe and the European World, launching the Age of Revolutions.

The Ancien Regime The name for the French Society of the early modern period ( ) The Kings spent huge amounts of money on palaces and luxuries. The Nobles ruled the countryside and resisted every attempt to centralize power.

The Ancien Regime Was a period of extreme wealth disparity.
The kings, nobles, and clergy enjoyed great wealth and privilege. The rest of society struggled just to get enough bread to live.

The Three Estates France was divided politically into 3 formal “estates” or divisions. Each supposedly had their role in society. Clergy Nobles Everyone Else Peasants Merchants City Dwellers Middle Class

The Three Estates The 1st, Clergy, kept France in touch with God—specifically a Roman Catholic God. The 2nd, Nobles and Royalty, led and protected France. The 3rd estate worked and toiled. They also paid the taxes. Clergy Nobles Everyone Else Peasants Merchants City Dwellers Middle Class

The Three Estates The nobles could collect taxes from those living on their lands. They themselves were not taxed. 0.5% of the population. The Clergy collected a “tithe” from the French people. Look back to your work on the Enlightenment. Answer the following questions: Which Enlightenment ideas do you believe would be most incompatible with the Ancien Regime? Use specific quotes if possible. To what extent do you believe this would inspire people to revolt?
