Stamp Act Protests Samuel Adams helped found the Sons of Liberty in 1765. Harassed customs agents, stamp agents, and royal governors.

Stamp Act Protests 1765- delegates from nine colonies met and issued a “Declaration of rights and Grievances.” NO TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION! (Radical Whigs) Widespread boycotts forced Parliament to repeal the Stamp Act! The colonies are working together!

Tension in Massachusetts
There were tensions between soldiers and colonists… On March 5, 1770, a fight broke out in Boston over taxation. A mob gathered and started taunting the guards at the Customs House. (snowballs and rocks) Violence erupted, leaving Crispus Attucks and 4 others dead! Sam Adams called it the “Boston Massacre”

Colonial Teamwork In 1772, a group of colonists from R.I. attacked and burned a British customs ship. King George III created a group to find them and bring them to trial. This plan to bring Americans to England for trial created widespread alarm! The colonies set up committees of correspondence to communicate about this and other threats to American liberty. By 1774, this linked most of the colonies together!

Take your tea and shove it.
Parliament passed the Tea Act in 1773 which allowed the British East India company to sell tea without being taxed.. (Townshend Acts) This hurt colonial tea merchants! December 16, Boston rebels dressed up like Native Americans and dumped 3 British tea ships’ cargo in the harbor. (92k lbs) This became known as the “Boston Tea Party”

King George Responds! King George was infuriated! Parliament responded with the Intolerable Acts (1774):

To Concord, by the Lexington Road!
Colonists in many New England towns began to stockpile weapons.. The minutemen were getting ready! General Thomas Gage (royal gov. of MA) learned of this and prepared to seize Sam Adams and John Hancock and destroy weapons. April 18,1775- Paul Revere caught wind of this and went to spread the word! “The regulars are coming!” (William Dawes) Revere is detained and Samuel Prescott finishes the ride

The shot heard ‘round the world
April 19, British troops arrive at Lexington. Faced 70 minutemen.. Someone fired a shot and in 15 minutes, 8 minutemen were killed! Next they marched to Concord where they found no weapons! They had a brief skirmish and then lined up to march back to Boston… The march became a slaughter! 3,000-4,000 minutemen had gathered. Dozens of British soldiers were killed!
