Brief presentation by Graham Keeping, Healthwatch Portsmouth Volunteer helps people get the best out of their local health and social care services; whether it’s improving them today or helping to shape them for tomorrow.

3 Healthwatch Portsmouth Graham’s volunteering experience
Attending the Advocacy workshop and knowledge of NHS Complaints Enter and View visits to care homes reviewing outcomes of Portsmouth Clinical Commissioning Group’s Multi-Speciality Community Provider project Took part in PLACE (Patient Led Assessment of the Care Environment) visits focussing on physical environments of care in hospital settings Offered feedback on the “ Big Conversation” and the engagement style of Portsmouth Clinical Commissioning Group About to do children’s safeguarding to have basic awareness and knowledge to support his engagement work with families and children Able to apply local knowledge/community feedback to wider issues and have impact on voluntary bodies

4 Graham’s suggestions for volunteering:
People choose to volunteer for a variety of reasons: Give something back to the community - information to educate on good practice - Doing research to give valuable insight  Help generate impactful outcomes - Drop in for volunteers provides regular support Can build on your existing experience - Taking professional experience to add value to activities - Undertaking exciting work in your interest area

Build links from and access into your community - Using your connections on the ground/across sectors - Draws out vital skills and services to serve local need  - Raise awareness of Healthwatch services and bring opportunities in  Opening doors to further opportunities in new areas - Position yourself to connect with key groups/ volunteering options Experience in team-working, relationship and network building - Apply your own skills which build the whole team skill set - Improve ability to relate to a range of people in a team - Experience the satisfaction of progress in the team

7 Benefit to health and care services
Support health and care services to build their capacity - Take pressure off of health and care services to provide additional services which complement what’s out there Provide insight and suggest solutions based on evidenced feedback from activities   Encourages health and care services to make connection with patients, service users and carers; their customer base Gives real life feedback to services sometimes disconnected
