Math 801A: Mathematical Operations – Denominate Numbers
Mathematics Essentials March 13th, 2017
2
Lesson Introduction Today I will...
add and subtract denominate numbers multiply and divide denominate numbers convert between measurements mentally when appropriate
3
Denominate Numbers Numbers that are written in association with a unit of measure. E.g. 7’3”, the 7’ and 3” are denominate numbers as they are associated with feet and inches, respectively.
4
Adding Denominate Numbers
1 yard = 3 feet OR the distance travelled in one step 1 foot = 12 inches Perimeter (P) = sum of all sides
5
Adding Denominate Numbers
Try the activity (questions #1-4) on page 47.
6
Subtracting Denominate Numbers
Similar to subtracting whole numbers or decimals Regrouping requires you to remember the link between the different units of measure. Step 1: align numbers according to common units of measure Step 2: subtract (regroup if necessary)
7
Subtracting Denominate Numbers
Practice question 8 on page 48. When done: work on Pg 49, #10 A, C, E, G, I, K, M, O, Q – this is part of your Denominate Numbers Assignment.
8
Multiplying Denominate Numbers
Multiply by a whole number, using the standard method for multiplication Regroup numbers based on units if possible Practice #11 on page 50.
9
Dividing Denominate Numbers
Two methods you can use: Method 1: divide regularly until you get to a new unit, regroup, continue Method 2: regroup measurement to the smallest unit and then divide as you normally would Practice #14 on page 51.

Homework! Denominate Numbers Assignment due Wednesday:
Pg 49, #10 A, C, E, G, I, K, M, O, Q Pg 52, #15 A, C, E, G, I, K, M
