Integers 6.3
2
So what is an integer? Set of whole numbers (this includes zero) and their opposites {…-3,-2,-1, 0, 1, 2, 3…} An integer and its opposite are the same distance from zero on a number line The opposite of -4 is 4… both are 4 spaces from zero
3
Positive Integers are…
12 5 greater than zero. 1,234 7 Negative Integers are… -7 -12 -1,234 -5 less than zero.
4
Zero is… an integer that is neither positive nor negative!
Zero does not have an opposite!
5
Is that number an integer?
-3 0.5 Yes N0 Yes N0 15 -19 Yes N0 Yes N0 -2.4 4 Yes N0 Yes N0 -123 Yes N0 Yes N0
6
Absolute Value is… number is the distance of a number from zero on the number line regardless of direction. Absolute value is represent by the absolute value bars EX:
7
Ordering Integers When ordering integers, smaller numbers are always
to the left of larger numbers on the number line. The further left a number is on the number line, the smaller the number! Quick Vocabulary: Ascending- least to greatest Descending- greatest to least EX: -15 is smaller than -5 because -15 is to the left of -5!
8
Click the right answer! -13 -23 8 20 -3 -15, -8, -3 0, -2, -4
Which number is the smallest? -13 -23 8 20 -3 Which set is ordered from least to greatest? -15, -8, -3 0, -2, -4
9
Comparing Integers < Less Than > Greater Than ≠ Not Equal to =
You see the small part 1st! You see the largest part 1st! < Less Than > Greater Than I always eat the largest number! ≠ Not Equal to = Equal to
10
Another way to remember…
< This looks this The arrow points to the smallest number! If arrow tip points left…you say “less than”! > This looks this Remember:The arrow points to the smallest number! If arrow tip points right…you say “greater than”!
