Notes on the Scientific Method
9/15 and 9/16 Notes Notes on the Scientific Method Unit 1: Science Inquiry By Hudson Area Schools, Edited by K. Schmidt
3
Ask a Question (Purpose):
You have a PROBLEM to solve. You ask a QUESTION you want answered.
4
Background Research Research what other scientists have done.
Science is cumulative (it builds on previous discoveries).
5
Hypothesis A prediction. And a reason.
NOT a guess (if you have to guess go back to the last step!)
6
Experiment Identify the dependent and independent variables.
Independent variable is the one you decide to change. Dependent variable is what you will measure. Controlled variables are all the things you will keep the same.
7
Observation/Analysis
Gather information using our five senses. Qualitative observations describe qualities like color or smell. Quantitative observations include a number or measurement.
8
Record Data Write down EVERYTHING! Look for patterns in the data.
The Data is your evidence.
9
Conclusion Accept or reject hypothesis*
You must run the experiment many times. Other scientists need to be able repeat your results. *Try Again!
10
Report Results To get credit for the discovery, it needs to be published. Science is cumulative!
