Scientific Notation
2
Why Do We Need Scientific Notation?
We deal with some very large numbers! Mass of Earth = kg And some very small numbers Mass of a proton = kg Scientific notation makes it easier for us to record data and do calculations.
3
Putting Numbers Into Scientific Notation
EXAMPLE: 506,000,000 Insert a decimal point after the first non-zero number Drop all zeros off the beginning or end of the number 5.06 Multiply by 10 5.06 x 10 Write the exponent Count how many spaces you moved the decimal point Moved to the right = negative exponent Moved to the left = positive exponent 5.06 x 10 8
4
Practice Put the following numbers into scientific notation 3450000000
Write the following as real numbers 2.1 x 104 8.992 x 10 -7
5
Practice Put the following numbers into scientific notation: 305400000
Write the following as real numbers: 5.43 x 107 3.02 x 10-6 9.8 x 102 5.44 x 10-10
6
Rewrite this table in scientific notation.
7
How Many sig figs in each number?
2000 0.2 20.00 20 52.20 0.900 .0042 1.0000 4.0 40 40.0 0.0040
