3
Nervous System Consists of neurons (nerve cells)
Controls and coordinates functions throughout the body.
4
The Skeletal System Supports the body, protects internal organs, provides for movement, and provides a site for blood cell formation. Consists of bones, cartilage, and connective tissue.
5
The Muscular System There are 3 different types of muscle: Skeletal (movement), Smooth (internal organs), and Cardiac (heart muscle). Muscle fibers contract to perform their particular job.
6
The Integumentary System
Skin, hair and nails. Helps protect the body from infection, remove waste from the body and to regulate body temperature.
7
The Circulatory System
Consists of the Heart, Blood and Blood Vessels. Acts as the body’s transportation system.
8
The Respiratory System
Exchanges Oxygen for Carbon Dioxide. Consists of the Lungs, Bronchi and Bronchioles.
9
The Digestive System Consists of the Mouth, Esophagus, Stomach, Small Intestine, Large Intestine, and Colon. Involved in the breakdown of large food molecules into smaller usable molecules.
10
The Excretory System Consists of the Bladder, Kidneys, and Urethra.
Removes liquid waste from the body.
11
The Endocrine and Reproductive Systems
Endocrine system regulates the body’s growth and development through the production of hormones. The reproductive system produces gametes (sex cells) and (in females) develops and nourishes an embryo.
12
The Immune System The Immune system fights infection through the activation of specific defenses. The most common of these defenses are white blood cells.
