Energy is required to do physical work. The energy for muscles to work is provided by a substance called ATP (adenosine triphosphate). ATP is produced by the breakdown of food substrates in the cellular environment, during a process known as cellular respiration. The amount of energy produced depends on whether sufficient oxygen is present in the cells.
