“Cellular Respiration”
Energy is required to do physical work. The energy for muscles to work is provided by a substance called ATP (adenosine triphosphate). ATP is produced by the breakdown of food substrates in the cellular environment, during a process known as cellular respiration. The amount of energy produced depends on whether sufficient oxygen is present in the cells. Glucose + oxygen > carbon dioxide + water + Energy equation 1 The energy generated is used to drive equation 2 ADP + Inorganic Phosphate + Energy > ATP
