It is very dark and Dante thinks he sees towers.

2. Virgil tells Dante that those are not towers but giants.
The giants are standing in the 9th circle and their navels are level with the 8th circle.

3. These giants are frozen up to their navels in ice.
As they continue they meet a giant named Nimrod.

4. Dante and Virgil come across Antaeus.
Virgil flatters Antaeus and gets him to help them.

5. The bottom is covered in ice.
Antaeus helps Dante and Virgil by picking them up in his hands and places them in the 9th circle.
