Wave Interaction Chapter 1.3
2
How waves interact and respond
Terms to know Reflection Refraction Law of reflection Diffraction Interference Terms to know Constructive interference Standing wave Node Antinode Resonance
3
Reflection When you bounce a ball against a wall what happens?
At what angle does it come off the wall?
5
Reflection Reflection is when an object or a wave hits a surface through which it can not pass, and it bounces back.
6
Angles Now Apply it to light… They are equal! Angle of incidence
Angel of reflection They are equal!
7
Refraction When a wave enters a new medium at an angle one side of the wave changes speed before the other side.
8
Refraction The bending of waves due to a change in speed when passing into a new medium. A minimum of 2 mediums are required!
9
Refraction Example:
10
Diffraction When a wave moves around a barrier it bends and spreads out due to a change in speed along a portion of the wave! Friction causes the wave to slow down. Only 1 medium is required for Diffraction

14
Interference Interactions between waves when they meet.
1. Constructive Interference 2. Destructive Interference

Standing waves Incoming wave and reflected wave
22
Standing waves Incoming wave and reflected wave
If an incoming wave and a reflected wave have just the right frequency they produce a combined wave that appears to be standing still.
24
Standing wave Nodes Antinodes Wavelength Two Antinodes
26
Resonance An increase in a wave’s amplitude when outside waves increase the amplitude of an object's natural frequency Musical instruments use this.
