5 Steps to dependency 1. Experimentation 2. Regular Use
3. Daily Preoccupation 4. Dependency

6 Withdrawal The discomfort & distress that follow when a person who is dependent on a drug discontinues the use of that drug.

7 Psychoactive Drugs- chemical substance that alters perceptions, mood or behavior.
4 Categories: 1. Depressants: slow down body functions. 2. Stimulants: arouse body functions. 3. Opiates: relieve pain, causes euphoria 4. Hallucinogens: distort perceptions or evoke sensation without sensory input. * Marijuana

8 Psychoactive Drugs and Synapses
Psychoactive drugs affect synapses and neurotransmitters in three ways: Binding with receptors Blocking receptor site Blocking neurotransmitters’ reuptake Reuptake: unused neurotransmitter chemical is reabsorbed by the sending neuron.

9

10 Depressants Alcohol Slows down sympathetic nervous system.
Disrupts memory processing. Reduces self-awareness. Involved in up to 60% of all crimes. The worst drug from a macro perspective out there. Why? High potential for dependence

11 Depressants Barbiturates Tranquilizers
Taken to sleep (but reduce REM sleep). Taken with other drugs- you can get a synergistic effect. High potential for dependence.

12 Stimulants Amphetamines Cocaine Caffeine Nicotine MDMA-Ecstasy Meth
Speed Cocaine Crack Caffeine Nicotine MDMA-Ecstasy Meth “the crash”

13

14 Opiates Opium, Heroin and Morphine Prescription Pain Killers
Addiction comes fast and the withdrawal symptoms are bad (high potential)

15 Hallucinogens/Psychedelics
LSD (Acid) Can cause PTSD and schizophrenia. Short-term memory loss, paranoia, violent outbursts, nightmares, flashbacks and panic attacks Low potential for dependence but you develop a tolerance for it

16 Hallucinogens/Psychedelics
Marijuana THC “Gateway Drug” Lowers inhibition Causes relaxation, mild euphoria Can amplify senses Impairs memory Can stay in your system for a month (it attaches to your fat) Is it addictive?

17
