1 ELL 2035 Holidays

2 Christmas December 25th This is the biggest holiday of the year when families get together and exchange presents. In Korea, it’s more of a couple holiday. Foods: turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, ham, and pies.

3 Thanksgiving Fourth Thursday of Nov (US) Second Monday of Oct (Canada)
Just like in Korea, this celebrates the fall harvest. Families gather and say what they are thankful for. Foods include turkey, stuffing, gravy, potatoes, turnips, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie.

4 Canada Day / Independence Day
July 1st (Canada) July 4th (US) To celebrate the independence of their country, citizens have BBQs and drink a lot. There’s also a lot of firework celebrations at night.

5 Easter end of March / start of April (changes yearly)
This is a family holiday, similar to Christmas and Thanksgiving. Parents usually hide chocolate eggs around their house that the Easter bunny left for them.

6 Mother’s Day / Father’s Day
second Sunday of May / third Sunday of June Just like Parents’ Day in Korea, these holidays honor both your mother and father.

7 Groundhog Day February 2nd (middle of winter)
This is a superstition which occurs in the middle of winter when a groundhog will awake from its sleep (hibernation) and check its shadow. If it sees its shadow, winter continues. But if the groundhog does not see its shadow, there will be an early spring.

8 St. Patrick’s Day March 17th
This celebrates Christianity coming to Ireland by Saint Patrick. Irish descendants in North America celebrate it by drinking green beer.

9 Halloween October 31st Kids wear costumes and go from house to house asking, ‘Trick or treat?’ Adults respond by giving children candies.
